Closely centered on national needs, the School of Integrated Circuits and Microelectronics deeply practices the research philosophies of original free exploration and retrospective fundamental research. It precisely aligns with major national demands in aerospace, aviation, and marine navigation, focusing on core issues in integrated circuits and "bottleneck" technologies, and consciously serves as a main force in fundamental research and a cradle of major scientific and technological breakthroughs.

The School balances original free exploration with retrospective fundamental research. On the one hand, it encourages researchers to pursue original innovation in underlying technologies, delving deep into fundamental principles and core algorithms. On the other hand, building on Northwestern Polytechnical University's (NPU) strengths in systems, complete machines, and model-based research, it extracts key scientific questions from aerospace equipment application scenarios and carries out reverse tackling of problems by "seeking roots in what already exists," thereby achieving a closed research loop of "coming from engineering and returning to engineering." With distinctive advantages in fields such as aerospace-specific integrated circuit design, aerospace micro/nano electromechanical systems (MEMS), and advanced integration and reliability, the School drives original breakthroughs and technology tracing in tandem, helping key technologies leap from following and running alongside global peers to taking the lead.

The School has led and undertaken major projects, including the National Science and Technology Major Projects, the National Key R&D Program, key weapon equipment models, national defense basic research, national defense advanced research programs, major national programs, and key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. It has been deeply involved in the development of multiple satellite and aircraft systems in major national projects, making significant contributions to the independent and self-reliant development of China's integrated circuit industry, the advancement of national defense science and technology, and the construction of the national economy.
